Meira Kumar, the Opposition’s presidential candidate, has had a long political path since joining Parliament in 1985 following a spell as an Indian Foreign Service officer. Meira Kumar, Indian diplomat, politician, and government official who served as speaker of the Lok Sabha was born in the Arrah area of Bihar. She is the daughter of Jagjivan Ram, a renowned Dalit activist and former deputy prime minister, and Indrani Devi, a liberation fighter. Kumar is the daughter of a notable Dalit activist and former deputy prime minister Jagjivan Ram and freedom fighter Indrani Devi. She attended Welham Girls School and graduated from Delhi University. In 1973, she began her career in the Indian Foreign Service. However, she joined active politics in 1985, a year before her father died, when she ran for the seat of Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.

Early Life

Kumar went to Dehradun’s Welham Girls School and Jaipur’s Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ Public School. She attended Banasthali Vidyapith for a brief period of time. Indraprastha College and the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, respectively, awarded her a Master’s degree and a Bachelor’s degree in law. In 2010, Banasthali Vidyapith awarded her an honorary doctorate. Kumar worked as a social worker in her youth and was a vocal supporter of social reforms, human rights, and democratic principles. During the 1967 famine in Bihar, she was named Chairperson of the National Drought Relief Committee, which was established by Congress. Kumar initiated a Family Adoption Scheme as chairman of the commission, in which drought-stricken families were supported by volunteer houses.

Career Of Meira Kumar

Kumar joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1973 and stayed for almost a decade. After postings to Madrid and London, she chose to enter politics in 1985, influenced by her father and India’s then-prime leader, Rajiv Gandhi. She defeated two other Dalit candidates in a by-election for a Lok Sabha seat from a constituency in Uttar Pradesh state. Kumar’s political career grew smoothly inside the Indian National Congress, owing to his close ties to the politically prominent Gandhi family and his representation of the lower castes. She was the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee from 1991 until 1992. Kumar was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from a New Delhi seat in 1996 and 1998.

She was named minister of social justice and empowerment in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration led by the Congress in 2004 and served in that position until 2009. She was named minister for water resources after the UPA’s resounding victory in the 2009 elections, and in June of that year, she was voted unopposed as speaker of the Lok Sabha. Kumar’s tenure as speaker of the Lok Sabha saw him start a number of initiatives, including one in 2011 to minimize the quantity of paper used in the chamber. All Lok Sabha members were given tablet computers as part of the legislation. Kumar was defeated in her effort to keep her Lok Sabha seat in the 2014 elections. Following the end of her term as speaker, she stepped down in early June.
