Sumitra Mahajan was born on April 12, 1943, in Chiplun, Maharashtra, to Usha and Purushottam Sathe, both Chitpavan Brahmins. After marrying Jayant Mahajan of Indore, she obtained her MA and LLB from Indore University (now Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya). Mahajan earned her bachelor’s degree from Indore University.
