Soni Sori Bio

Soni Sori is an Indian political leader of the Aam Aadmi Party in Sameli village of Dantewada in South Bastar, Chhattisgarh, India. In 2011, the Delhi Police Crime Branch for Chhattisgarh Police took her into custody on the accusation of acting as a conduit for Maoists. She was tortured and also sexually assaulted during her imprisonment by the Chhattisgarh state police. In April 2013 due to lack of evidence to convict her in six of the eight cases, she was acquitted by the Indian Courts. She again started campaigning after release from prison. This time she took a stand for the rights of those who were caught up in the conflict between Maoists and the government. Moreover, she also spoke about criticizing police violence against the tribespeople in the region.

Early life and Education

Sori was born on 15 April 1975, Bade Bedma, Chhattisgarh, India. She was the daughter of Munda Ram Sori and Jogi Sori. Her father was a former Indian National Congress. For over a decade he served as sarpanch of Bade Bedma village. Her mother was a housewife and died in 2012. She also has a brother named Sukhdev. He and his wife served as Congress representatives and were elected to the panchayat.

She completed her higher secondary Education at Mata Rukmani Kanya Ashram in DimraPal, Jagdalpur. Further, she attended a nursing college. But later she dropped out and served as a warden of a girls’ residential school in Jabeli village.

Political career

In 2014 she joined Aam Aadmi Party after her release from jail. However, previously the party didn’t give her a ticket but later in their sixth list, they announced Sori as their candidate from the Bastar constituency. In the 2014 general election, she lost the contest from Baster to Dinesh Kashyap who was a member of BJP.

On 10 April 2014, on the day of the election, the Election Commission of India had served the notice on her for violation of the model code of conduct which says that she displayed her party symbol while voting.

Personal life

She got married to Anil Kumar. She and her husband lived in Sameli Village. The couple has three children named Muskan Soni, Deependra Kumar, and Axara Sori.

Awards

In 2018, she won the Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk as she was among five winners who were awarded from their regions. This award was given to her for her ongoing work towards justice for the Adivasi community in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh
