Shaukeen Movie Review: Starcast, Opinion

Shaukeen (English: Enthusiast) is a 1982 Hindi-language comedy film directed by Basu Chatterjee that explores the psychological characteristics of individuals approaching the end of their lives. Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt, A.K. Hangal, Rati Agnihotri, and Mithun Chakraborty appear in the film. Basu Chaterjee had been a fan of S. D. Burman’s song Nitol Paye Rinik Jhinik since boyhood and had asked his son R. D. Burman to create a song for the film Jab Bhi Koi using the same melody. The film was partially inspired on the 1962 American film Boys’ Night Out and was based on the storey of Samaresh Basu.

Plot

Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt, and A.K. Hangal play three lecherous old men in Shaukeen. And all three old guys had one flaw: they were all attracted to women. They get together for drinks one day at Ashok Kumar’s apartment and decide to take a trip to enjoy the last years of their lives before getting utterly senile.

They employ a driver named Sakharam (Mithun Chakraborty), who is a friend of Choudhuri’s son (Ashok Kumar). He eventually persuades them to travel to Goa, where his lover, a singer/dancer at a small bar, lives. While in Goa, the three elderly guys find themselves into some humorous situations with Anita (Rati Agnihotri), unconscious to the fact that she is their driver’s love interest.

The film was a smash blockbuster, earning the ninth greatest box office revenue of 1982.

Remakes

The Shaukeens are the main characters in this storey. Prema Pichollu, starring Chiranjeevi, Gummadi, and Allu Ramalingaiah, was remade in Telugu.

On November 7, 2014, The Shaukeens, a remake of Shaukeen, was released. Piyush Mishra, Anupam Kher, and Annu Kapoor starred in the version, with Lisa Haydon as the female role. Grazing Goat Pictures produced the picture.
