P. Vijayalakshmi Bio
Vijayalakshmi Palanisami, better known as P. Vijayalakshmi, is a former minister who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu from the Sankagiri constituency from 2011 to 2016. She defeated her uncle and DMK strongman Veerapandi S Arumugam. Previous to this, she was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Veerapandi constituency as a member of Anna Dravida MunnetraKazhagam candidate in the 1980 and 1984 elections. Then again in the 2001 elections, she was elected from Panamarathupatti State Assembly Constituency and at that time she served as Social Welfare minister.
In 1985, she became Khadi and Handlooms minister by the Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran of that time, only to be removed from the post along with 10 other ministers in 1986. She was briefly in OPS camp along with former minister Semmalai after the death of ADMK supremo J. Jayalalitha. But soon, she returned to the party fold.
Personal details
She was born on 17 September 1954. She graduated with a BA from Haji Karutharavuthar college in Uthamapalayam. She is the daughter of farmer couple Alagupandi Thevan and Valliammal. She has three sisters and a brother.
She was married to the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu O. Panneerselvam on 14 November 1977.
She died at the age of 66 as she was suffering from abdomen-related problems. She had been undergoing treatment in GEM Hospital at Perungudi.
Political career
From 1980 to 1989, she was the Member of Legislative Assembly from Veerapandi (State Assembly Constituency) for two terms. Then from 2001 to 2006, she was a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Panamarathupatti (State Assembly constituency).
From 10 February 1985 to 21 October 1986, she served as Minister of Khadi and Handlooms under Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran.
From 14 May 2001 to 12 May 2006, she served as Minister of Social Welfare under Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and J. Jayalalitha.
From 2011 to 2016, she was the Member of the Legislative Assembly from Sankari (State Assembly Constituency).
