Kapila Vatsyayan Bio
Kapila Vatsyayan was a prominent scholar of Indian Classical dance, art, architecture, and art history. She was a member of parliament and also served as a member of the bureaucracy in India. In addition to this, she was the founding director of the Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts.

Early life and Education
She was born on 25 December 1928 in Delhi, India. She was the daughter of Ram Lal and Satyawati Malik. She studied MA in English literature from Delhi University. Further, she earned another MA Degree in Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, US. Later, she completed her Ph.D. at Banaras Hindu University. She also had a brother named Keshav Malik who worked as a poet and Art critic.
Career
She has authored many books such as The Square and the Circle of Indian arts in 1997, Bharata: theNatya Sastra in 1996, and Matralaksanam in 1988.
In 1987, she became the Founder Trustee and a Member Secretary of Indira Gandhi’s National Center for the Arts in Delhi. In 1993, she became its academic director and held that post till 2000.
In 2005, when the Indian National Congress-led center-left Government returned to power, she became the chairperson of the Institution. She served as secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Education and she established a large number of national Institutions of Higher Education. She became the chairperson of the Asia project at the India International Centre in New Delhi.
In 2006, she was nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha, the upper House of Parliament of India. Subsequently, in March 2006 she resigned from the office following an office of profit controversy. Then in April 2007, she was again nominated to the Rajya Sabha with the term expiring in February 2012.
Personal life
In 1957, She got married to SachchidanandHirananda Vatsyayan ‘Ajneya’ who was a famous Hindi Writer. Later, they got divorced in 1969.
At the age of 92 years, Kapila Vatsyayan died on 16 September 2020 at home in New Delhi.
Awards
She was awarded several times in her whole career. In 1970 she won the Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship. Later in 1975, she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship. She won the John D Rockefeller 3rd Award 2 times by the Asian cultural council in 1970 and 1992. Moreover, in 1998, Congress on Research in Dance ( CORD) awarded her for their outstanding contribution to dance research. In 2000 she was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna Award. In addition to this in 2011, she was a recipient of Padma vibhushan by the government of India.
