Aparupa Poddar, better known as Afrin Ali, is an Indian politician who served as a member of parliament to the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha from Aram bagh Lok Sabha constituency, West Bengal. She has won the 2014 and 2019 general elections of India as an All India Trina mool Congress candidate.

Early life and Education
Afrin Ali was born on 8 January 1986 in Chandannagar, West Bengal, India. She is currently 36 years old as of 2021. Her father’s name was Shri Radha Gobindo Poddar and her mother’s name was Smt. Shyamali Poddar.
She went to Hooghly Mohsin College and later studied at the University of Burdwan. She also holds an LL.B and LL.M degree from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University in Hyderabad.
Political career
In 2014, She became a Member of Parliament to 16th Lok Sabha from the Arambagh constituency. She was preceded by Sakti Mohan Malik. Presently, she is serving the same position.
She has served as a Member of the Standing Committee on Water Resources. Moreover, she has also served as a Member of the Consultative Committee and in the Ministry of Tourism and culture.
Personal life
She is married to Mohd. Shakir Ali, they have three children among which two daughters and one son.
She resides at 28, Gandhi Sarak, Rishta, Serampore- 712248, West Bengal, India.
Controversies
The accusations related to the first controversy are related to financial corruption and were confirmed to be true on 5 October 2017. She confessed that she had taken a bribe from Narada news Boss Mathew Samuel as a part of the Narada sting operation.
Another allegation she has faced was related to her religion. She was born in a Hindu family and was previously named Aparupa Poddar at birth. After that, she married a Muslim man and changed her name to Afrin Ali. When she stood for elections from a parliamentary constituency which was reserved for those who belong to scheduled castes, the Bharatiya Janata Party lodged a complaint in front of the Election Commission of India seeking cancellation of her candidature on the request that she has converted to Islam and hence she is no longer belong to schedule caste. After that Aparupa Poddar claimed that she had changed her name but not her religion.
