Early life and Education
Rita Verma was born on 15 July 1953 in Patna, Bihar. Currently, she is 68 years old as of 2021. Her father’s name was R. N. Prasad and her mother’s name was Sarojini Prasad. She was born in a Karna Kayastha family.
She holds a Master of Arts degree in history and also completed a Ph.D. from Patna University. She started her career as a history teacher at Ranchi University.
Personal life
In 1976, she married Randhir Prasad Verma who was an IPS of Bihar cadre from the 1974 batch. In 1991, her husband died while fighting off a robbery attempt at a bank in Dhanbad as there he was serving as the superintendent of police.
Political career
In 1991, she was elected to the 10th Lok Sabha from the Dhanbad constituency in Bihar. In 1996, 1998, and 1999 from the same constituency of Bihar. She served as a Member of Parliament for Lok Sabha from 1991 to 2004. She was preceded by A. K. Roy. She was succeeded by Chandrashekhar Dubey.
From 13 October 1999 to 27 May 2000, she served as Minister of State of Mines and Minerals. Then on 27 May 2000, she became Minister of State of Health and Family Welfare and served that position till 30 September 2000. From 30 September 2000 to 1 September 2001, she served as Minister of State of Rural Development. On 1 September 2001, she became Minister of Education and served that position till 29 January 2003. So, she served as Minister of State in Government of India from 13 October 1999 to 29 January 2003.
Moreover, she was also a member of the panel of chairmen of the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1997 and 1998 to 1999. In 1998, she was also the whip of the Bharatiya Janata Party which is a parliamentary party.
